We start the year with phenomenal podcast growth – more than 700,000 active podcast shows and more than 29 million episodes, according to research gathered by Music Oomph from sources such as Nielsen and Edison.

But that’s only part of the story. Only 15 years ago, “podcast” was added as a word to the dictionary; now nearly 70 percent of everyone in the US is familiar with podcasts and more than half — 165 million — have listened to one. Here are some of the more compelling stats from the report.
