Podcasting continues to gain momentum. San Francisco-based Listen Notes says 13.2 million podcast episodes were published during the first six months compared to 16.6 million in all of 2019. In fact, there were more new podcasts launched in the first six months of 2020 than in all of last year

This momentum has been fueled in part by a global pandemic that has encouraged businesses and people around the world to explore new and engaging ways to reach their audiences at-a-distance — and podcasting is a natural fit.

During the first half of the year, 383,678 new podcasts debuted. This represents nearly a third (29%) of all podcasts, according to the podcast search engine Listen Notes.

Listen Notes says 70% of podcasts are in English. There has been a big jump in Spanish-language podcasts, which now equals 7% of all shows – a 75% increase since March. There has been a similar surge in Portuguese-language podcasts as the Brazilian market has become one of the biggest in the world.

The top genre remains Society & Culture with 13.3% of all podcasts, followed by Education (10.1%), Religion & Spirituality (10.0%), Business (8.5%) Arts (8.2%), Comedy (8.0%), Music (6.1%), Health & Fitness (5.9%), Sports (5.2%) and News (5.0%).
